Not to be outdone by either Bush in hawkishness, Herman Cain has declared that he would use preemptive war to protect…Israel:
My first option would be to make it crystal clear, and to use the words that I’ve used previously, if you mess with Israel you’re messing with the United States of America. If we don’t have a clear position with respect to Israel, Iran and other countries are going to continue to threaten Israel. So by saying that that’s the Cain Doctrine, if Israel is attacked, I’m going to consider that an attack against the United States of America.
To put it simply: An attack against Israel is not an attack against the United States. The United States military is to protect the United States and its citizens, not other nations and theirs, even if they are allies.
At least President Cain would seek congressional approval:
And I’m going to go to the United States congress and get their blessing on that position.
In that case, under a Cain administration, I may have to start voting for anti-war Democrats merely to keep us out of war with Iran.
